1. A Calorie is a Calorie

It is a common myth that all that matters for weight loss is calories in, calories out.

Of course, calories matter. But the types of foods we eat are also important.

Here are 3 examples of how “a calorie is NOT a calorie.”

Fructose vs. Glucose: Fructose is more likely to stimulate hunger, increase abdominal obesity and insulin resistance, compared to the same amount of calories from glucose (1, 2, 3).
Protein: Eating protein can raise the metabolic rate and reduce hunger compared to fat and carbs (4).
Medium vs. long-chain fatty acids: Fatty acids that are of medium length (such as from coconut oil) raise metabolism and reduce hunger compared to longer chain fatty acids (5, 6, 7).
Bottom Line: A calorie is not a calorie. Different foods affect our bodies, hunger and hormones in different ways.

2. Eating a Lot of Protein is Bad For You

Some people think that a high-protein diet will harm your kidneys and cause osteoporosis.

It is true that eating protein can make you excrete more calcium in the short term (8).

However, long-term studies show that protein intake is associated with improved bone health and a lower risk of fractures, not the other way around (9, 10, 11).

Studies don’t find any association with kidney disease either (12, 13).

The two most important risk factors for kidney failure are diabetes and high blood pressure. Eating adequate protein helps with both, which should reduce your risk of kidney disease later in life (14, 15, 16, 17).

Unless you have a medical condition, there’s no reason to be afraid of having more protein in your diet. It’s a good thing.

Bottom Line: Eating a high protein diet may be protective against bone fractures and reduce the two most important risk factors for kidney failure.

3. Saturated Fat Raises The Bad Cholesterol and Gives You Heart Disease

The myth that saturated fat raises cholesterol and causes heart disease is still alive today.

This ideas was based on some flawed observational studies conducted in the 60s and 70s.

Since then, many studies have re-examined this relationship and discovered that:

There is literally no association between saturated fat consumption and cardiovascular disease (24, 25, 26).
Saturated fat raises HDL (the good) cholesterol and changes the LDL from small, dense (bad) to Large LDL, which is benign (27, 28, 29).
There is no reason to avoid natural foods that are rich in saturated fats. Meat, coconut oil and butter are perfectly healthy foods.

Bottom Line: Despite decades of anti-fat propaganda, saturated fat has never been proven to cause heart disease. New studies prove that there is literally no association.

4. Coffee is Bad For You

Coffee has gotten a bad reputation in the past.

It is true that caffeine, the active stimulant compound in coffee, can slightly raise blood pressure in the short term (30).

Despite these mild adverse effects, long term observational studies actually show that coffee lowers the risk of many diseases.

Coffee can:

Improve brain function (31).
Help you burn more fat (32, 33, 34).
Lower your risk of diabetes… in some studies as much as 67% (35, 36).
Lower your risk of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s (37, 38).
Protect your liver against cirrhosis and cancer (39, 40).
Coffee is also loaded with antioxidants. It is actually the biggest source of antioxidants in the western diet and outranks both fruits and vegetables, combined (41, 42, 43).

Bottom Line: Despite coffee being able to mildly elevate blood pressure, observational studies show a strong and consistent reduction in many serious diseases like Alzheimer’s and type II diabetes.

5. Eggs Are Rich in Cholesterol And Can Give You Heart Disease

Eggs have been unfairly demonized because they contain large amounts of cholesterol.

However, dietary cholesterol doesn’t necessarily raise blood cholesterol and eggs have never been proven to cause harm.

If anything, eggs are among the most nutritious and healthiest foods you can eat.

They’re loaded with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

Studies show that egg consumption actually improves the blood lipid profile. They raise the HDL (good) cholesterol and change the LDL from small, dense to Large, which is benign (44, 45).

Observational studies show no association between egg consumption and risk of heart disease (46, 47, 48).

Additionally, some studies show that eggs for breakfast can help you lose weight… at least compared to a breakfast of bagels (49, 50).

Bottom Line: Eggs are one of the healthiest and most nutritious foods you can eat and there is no association between egg consumption and risk of cardiovascular disease.

Now You Can Live Without Breathing!!!

When a patient suffers from acute lung failure or a blocked airway, their blood needs oxygen – and fast.  Without enough blood flow to the heart and brain, he or she can suffer from cardiac arrest or massive brain damage.

But often times, the complex machines needed to keep blood oxygenated are not so readily available.  So what if there was a temporary fix for patients who need oxygen in a hurry?

That solution may well be on its way.  A team of researchers at Boston Children’s Hosptial have developed tiny, oxygen-filled microparticles that can be injected straight into a person’s veins in order to quickly oxygenate a person’s blood, giving doctors or paramedics more time to perform more complex life-saving procedures.

According to Dr. John Kheir, of the department of cardiology at Boston Children’s Hospital and the study’s lead author, the motivation to design these microparticles came to him after a tragic incident occurred with one of his patients in 2006.

“I was taking care of a cute redhead girl in ICU who had severe pneumonia,” Kheir told FoxNews.com.  “She didn’t have a breathing tube at the time, and all of a sudden she had a pulmonary hemorrhage – when lung tissue gets damaged and actually erodes into the pulmonary arteries.

“Her lungs filled up with blood and she went into cardiac arrest,” Kheir continued.  “So we put her on an ECMO machine… [which] removes blood from the body, transfers it to a machine that exposes it to oxygen and then puts it back in the body.  We were able to get her onto that machine, which requires a surgical procedure.  So that took about 25 minutes, but during that time her brain was very deprived of oxygen and it was severely injured.”

While pulmonary hemorrhages happen very rarely, Kheir realized that many patients could benefit from a temporary method for restoring oxygen that’s less invasive.  After working with various chemical engineers, six years later Kheir and his team have developed their microparticles that successfully restored oxygen in the blood of mice.

The tiny “bubbles” consist of a single layer of fatty molecules called lipids that surround an even smaller pocket of oxygen gas.  Delivered in a liquid solution, the particles can be injected straight into the bloodstream without causing a deadly air embolism – in which a large bubble of gas blocks blood flow in a vein or artery.

“We packaged the gas within small particles,” Kheir said.  “It creates a lot of small particles rather than one large gas bubble, which allows them to disperse and break apart and navigate capillaries and arties.  The second thing it does is increase the surface area to volume ratio, so it allows for a huge surface area for the gas to transfer. It brings oxygen into very close proximity to red tissue and red blood cells – a very rapid transfer.”

After injecting their microparticles in mice, the researchers saw that the animals’ blood-oxygen levels became normal within seconds.  To test how their microparticles fared in a more dangerous scenario, Kheir and his colleagues completely blocked the mice’s tracheas and immediately injected the particles.  The mice stayed alive for 15 minutes without taking a single breath.

While this feat is extraordinary, Kheir noted the microparticles should only be administered for a limited period of time – between 15 and 30 minutes.

“We limited it to 15 minutes for a reason,” Kheir said.  “The particles don’t really exchange carbon dioxide at all.  Carbon dioxide is normally carried in the plasma.  Most patients don’t die from high carbon dioxide, but they definitely die from low oxygen.  It’s only intended to stabilize patients for a period of time while another procedure is being done.”

According to Kheir, numerous lives could potentially be saved if their invention is made for humans.  For example, if someone has drowned and needs oxygen on their way to the hospital, a quick injection could prolong their life for another 30 minutes.

“The drug could be stored in bags or syringes and administered on a semi-continuous basis,” Kheir said.  “Our vision for this is that this drug would be stored on emergency carts all over the hospital and even outside the hospital in an ambulance.  Any time a patient is really, really sick for any reason, whoever is taking care of them could rescue them with a standard intravenous line.  The primary reason that patients have a cardiac arrest is for breathing reasons.  There’s a serious potential to improve the mortality and morbidity rate of patients in the hospital.”

Dean Ornish, the founder of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute in Sausalito, California claims that diet, stress reduction and exercise can lower LDL by 40% and also helps to remove plaque from the arteries.

Here are some measures you can take to reduce your cholesterol level :

Diet
A well-balanced diet containing lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes and fish is essential for maintaining low cholesterol levels. Avoid meat and dairy products. You can also follow the DASH diet plan also known as Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension diet.

Foods that are particularly effective in lowering LDL levels are salmon, avocados, nuts, garlic, olive oil, spinach, green tea, dark chocolate, beans and oats.

Lose Weight
By losing your weight up to 10% or more you can get rid of high levels of LDL. Keep in mind, the trick is not only to lose the weight but also to maintain it.

Avoid Saturated fats
Saturated fats are one of the major diet-linked causes of high levels of LDL. These fats are usually obtained from pork, poultry, beef, lamb, milk, cream and butter. You can also find them in coconut oil, palm oil and cocoa butter. Limit the consumption of these foods to decrease the levels of bad cholesterol. The American Heart Association suggests that not more than 7% of calories should be taken from sources containing saturated fats.

Limit Trans Fats
Your diet shouldn’t consist of calories from trans fats more than 1% in a day. You can find trans fats in processed foods, animal products, hydrogenated margarine, cooking oils and shortening. Trans fats lower HDL and increase LDL levels.

Quit Smoking
Smoking may stop you from reaching your healthful goals of low LDL. It is also known for decreasing HDL levels.

Exercise
Taking regular exercise can lower the levels of LDL and increase HDL levels. Taking aerobic exercise for 30 minutes, every 5 days a week can increase HDL levels by 5 to 10%.

Supplements
Supplements containing soluble fiber and plant sterols can prove to be effective for lowering the LDL levels. Plant sterols are also found in fortified foods such as rice milk, orange juice and margarine and can reduce LDL levels by 15%. You can find soluble fibers in some natural foods such as nuts, flax seeds, oats and pshyllium husk or in dietary supplements like Metamucil.

These food supplements along with healthy diet and regular exercise can reduce bad cholesterol levels by 20 to 40%.

Exercise to Improve Your Eye Sights

5 Exercises to strengthen your eye muscles and improve your vision

1.Blinking

Blinking is an often overlooked yet simple way to keep your eyes fresh and being able to focus longer. Computer users and television watchers tend to blink less, especially when they are intently focused on something. Try it just now as a simple exercise. For the next two minutes blink every 3 – 4 seconds. After you have done this for two minutes, mentally take note of how your eyes feel, are they strained, relaxed, tired. Now try and not blink for 30 seconds at a time for two minutes. Do you feel any difference?
Whenever you blink your eyes are going into a brief period of darkness which helps to keep your eyes fresh and discharges previous information ready for new information, this helps to reduce eye strain.

2.Palming

This is done to relieve stress around the eyes and as a way to relax your eyes whilst taking a computer break.
Instructions for palming
1. Take a few deep breathes before you begin.
2. Make yourself comfortable whilst leaning forward on a desk or with your elbows resting on your knees. Close your eyes.
3. Place your two hands over your eyes with the cup of your palm covering your eyes, your fingers on your forehead and the heel of your hand will rest on your cheekbone. Make sure you can blink freely and you are not putting too much pressure on your eyes.
That’s it. Palming gives you the opportunity to rest your mind and your eyes for a few minutes at a time. It may not sound much of an exercise but it can make a big difference in your working day if you stop for a few minutes and do this exercise.

3.Figure of eight

This is to exercise your eye muscles and increase their flexibility. This is quite a simple exercise but a good one.
Imagine a giant figure of eight in front of you about 10 feet in front of you. Now turn the 8 on it’s side. Now trace the figure of eight with your eyes, slowly. Do it one way for a few minutes and then do it the other way for a few minutes. It may seem very alien at first but it’s worth persevering with it.

4.Near and far focusing

This is one of my favourite exercises as you can do it almost anywhere, I say almost as I couldn’t imagine doing it on the underground without getting strange looks from those around me.
Instructions for Near and far focusing.
Sit in a comfortable position, or stand, this will only take 2-3 minutes at a time.
Put your thumb about 10 inches in front of you and focus on it.
Now focus on something else about 10 – 20 feet in front of you.
On each deep breath switch between focusing on your thumb and the 10-20 feet object in front of you.
This will strengthen the muscles in your eyes over time and improve your vision overall.

5.Zooming

This is another one of my favorites as it is very easy and quick to do.
Instructions for zooming
Sit in a comfortable position
Stretch out your arm with your thumb in the hitchhike position
Focus on your thumb as your arm is outstretched.
Now bring your thumb closer to you, focusing all the time, until your thumb is about 3 inches in front of your face.
Now move your thumb away again until your arm is fully outstretched.
Do this for a few minutes at a time throughout the day.
This exercise will strengthen your focusing skills and your eye muscles in general.
